Introduction:

Smart lighting is one of the coolest ways to upgrade your room aesthetic. With all these different LED lights and different smart lamps, it’s really hard to choose the right lighting for your room. But what if there was a way to push smart lighting to its limits and totally make your room unrecognizable in a good way? Well, then you might be interested in Cloud LEDs, a totally fun and unique way you can set up lighting in your room. In this guide, I will show you all of the recommended materials you’ll need, and how to set it up step by step. And the best part? It’s really easy to set up. So what are you waiting for? Let’s jump right in.

Supplies List:

Now before we get started, here is a quick list of the materials you’ll need to create your DIY Cloud LEDs. If you don’t already have these items at home, I’ve included some recommended options on Amazon so you can find them easily online.

These lights create the glowing effect inside the clouds and bring the entire project to life.

Polyfil is what gives the clouds their fluffy and realistic texture

Spray adhesive helps attach the polyfil to the foam board quickly and evenly.

A hot glue gun helps secure LED strips and reinforce materials where needed

Foam boards act as the base of the cloud structure. They make it easier to shape the clouds and prevent materials from sticking directly to your ceiling.

Masking tape is so you can preset lighting layouts to see which lighting style you would like best.

Alright, now that we got the materials required, let’s jump right into this fun and enjoyable project.

1.Test Your Materials

For the first step, I highly recommend you test out all of the materials you have to ensure your Cloud LEDs work properly after setting up.

  • Take a small amount of polyfil and attach it to one of your foam boards using the spray adhesive.

Tip: Shape the polyfil with your hands to experiment with how you want your cloud shapes to look

  • Plug in your LED strips and turn them on to ensure they work properly

Tip: Try different patterns, colors, and brightness levels so you can decide what lighting style you want for your clouds

  • Plug in your hot glue gun and test a small amount of glue so you can get comfortable using it

Safety Tip: Hot glue guns can get extremely hot. Always be sure to keep your hands away from the nozzle and take caution when applying glue.

  • Place the foam boards against your ceiling to see how the base of your cloud layout will look

Tip: Before sticking them onto your ceiling, hold them in place with your hands to visualize how they will look on your ceiling.

Now that you’ve tested all your materials and know everything works properly, it’s time to move on to the fun part of the project.

2. Apply the Base

If you’ve gotten some foam boards, then it’s time to start applying them to your ceiling.

If you haven’t gotten any foam boards, here is my top recommendation for this project:

Attaching your foam boards to the ceiling acts as the foundation for your clouds.

  • Apply a light coat of spray adhesive to the back of your foam board and stick it to your ceiling

-Spray the adhesive lightly on the back of your foam board

-Press it firmly against the ceiling and hold in place for about 30-60 seconds

Tip: Don’t apply too much adhesive as it can drip and make a mess

The reason why you want to use spray adhesive instead of a hot glue gun is because:

  • It creates even coverage across the board
  • It has a stronger hold over larger surfaces
  • Less chance of the boards falling later
  • It doesn’t create lumps behind the board

Using the spray adhesive helps keep your foam boards secure and prevents problems later in the project.

3. Apply Lighting

Applying the lighting is where your project really starts to come alive. This is what gives your cloud that cool glow and immersive look.

LED strips work best with this project, the ones I recommend are bright, easy to control, and perfect for this setup:

Plan The LED Layout

Planning the LED layout is crucial as it sets the foundation for your clouds and lighting.

  • Start by taking your LED strips and start applying them to your base with some masking tape

-Play around and move your LED strips different ways throughout your base

-Turn on your LEDs and see how the lighting would look, try to picture the clouds surrounding it

Tip: Try different lighting styles and colors with your LEDs to get an idea of what aesthetic you want.

Masking tape is used as:

  • A temporarily sticking solution when messing around with different layouts
  • Avoids permanent sticking if you wanted to rearrange the layout during planning

Using masking tape makes it more convenient to plan LED strip layouts. It also acts as a placeholder before applying the hot glue.

Stick LEDs to Base

Once you are happy with your LED strip layout, it’s time to lock everything in

  • Take your hot glue gun and start carefully sticking your LED strips to your base

Slowly stick your LED strips by carefully replacing the masking tape with hot glue

-Apply hot glue in little dabs, as too much can cause bumpy and uneven looking lines

Tip: Don’t worry about making it perfect – once the clouds go over it, everything blends together and looks amazing.

After you are done with this step, your setup is already starting to look cool.

Turn on your lights and take a second to see how it all looks, this is where your room really starts to transform.

4. Attach Clouds

Now we are at the fun part of this project. This is also the part in the project where everything comes together. This is the moment you have been waiting for.

Polyfil is the top material for this project, polyfil is the material that actually makes your clouds look fluffy and real. If you don’t have any polyfil, here is my top recommendation:

Model Your Clouds

I highly recommend shaping and modeling your clouds before applying them as it is how everything will turn out.

-Mess around with the polyfil and try to stick some together with the spray adhesive.

-Try different styles of clouds to see what will work best in your mind

Tip: If you have a spare foam board available, I highly recommend sticking some clouds on it to view how it would look on your base.

You generally want to use spray adhesive as it provides:

  • A strong hold that keeps your polyfil securely attached without falling over time
  • Even coverage that helps distribute the polyfil evenly across your base
  • An ease of use that is much faster and more convenient than glue or tape
  • Flexible positioning that allows you to layer and shape clouds naturally

Using spray adhesive instead of masking tape or a hot glue gun really makes the cloud attaching process more easier for you. And it will look a lot better and cleaner.

Attach Your Clouds

Now it’s time to bring everything together and really make this project shine. As you attach your polyfil clouds, you’ll start to see that soft, glowing sky effect forming. This is the final step before your entire setup looks immersive.

  • Start by taking your polyfil and start applying it to your base using the spray adhesive

-Lightly stretch and place the polyfil across your base

-Use spray adhesive in small sections (Don’t overdo it)

-Step back often to see how your progress is doing, and shape clouds if needed

Pro Tip: Be careful where and how you apply your polyfil clouds, as too much can make the lights look dull instead of vibrant.

Once done, you may move on to the next step.

5. Admire Your Work

First of all, I just want to say congratulations, you did it. If step 4 was followed properly and you are happy with how everything turned out, then the project is completed.

Once everything is in place, turn on your LED strips if you haven’t yet. The clouds should glow softly, creating that ambient sky effect that transforms your room.

Pro Tip: Try different lighting styles with the clouds to see different types of styles and moods you can go for. Soon in the future, you could always change your cloud style for a different aesthetic.

If you are happy with the setup you created and your room has that cool aesthetic feel. Then congratulations, you just completed your new Cloud LED DIY project. I am so proud of you, you went from a generic boring room and transformed it into an immersive experience. This is the moment where most people realize that it was 100% worth it.
